M-H Makes U.K. Purchase

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 9/2/2002

McGraw-Hill Education has acquired Buckingham, England's Open University Press for an undisclosed price. Headed by John Skelton and Barry Clarke, Open University publishes in the areas of education, health and social welfare, psychology and sociology. The company publishes about 100 new titles annually and has a backlist of 850 books. Its revenues are estimated at more than £3 million.

Open University's back-office operations will be integrated into M-H's U.K. facility in Maidenhead, although

M-H is retaining Open University's editorial, marketing, sales and production staff in Buckingham. Skelton and Clarke have left the company, and Simon Allen, managing director of McGraw-Hill Education Europe, Middle East & Africa, will add the Open University imprint to his responsibilities. The acquisition complements M-H's list, which focuses on business, economics, computer science and engineering. M-H's textbooks are sold throughout the world.
