Diamond Saga from WWII

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 9/23/2002

The extraordinary story of a cache of valuable uncut diamonds, seized from Jews during WWII, stolen by SS officers, then buried by two American GIs who killed the Nazis, will be told in a book just bought for Forge. It's Blood from a Stone: The Quest for the Life Diamonds by Yaron Svoray and Richard Hammer. Svoray learned about the buried treasure from a surviving American and began combing the area in Alsace where he was told the diamonds had been hidden; after 12 years, his efforts were rewarded. His coauthor, Hammer, is an Edgar Award–winner, and the book was bought by Forge consulting editor Pat LoBrutto from William Morris's Mel Berger. It will be published in May, a month before a TV documentary airs.
