Yippee for Zippy

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 9/23/2002

Excellent reviews and bookseller attention (a Book Sense Pick) put Haven Kimmel's A Girl Named Zippy: Growing Up Small in Mooreland, Indiana on the radar screen back when it was published in hardcover in March 2001 (the trade paperback came out this May). The Broadway Books title got a big boost when it was chosen two weeks ago by Today as its latest book club pick. That was enough to place it close to the top of the national charts (#2 on PW's list last week; now at #3). Kimmel's first novel, The Solace of Leaving Early, was published in June, when she did an eight-city tour for both books. The trade paper edition of Zippy, pre–Today Show, had close to 16,000 copies in print; the in-print figure is now more than 153,000. There are about 17,000 hardcover copies of Zippy in print and 22,500 copies of Solace.
