Thomas to New Post at Doubleday Broadway

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 9/23/2002

Bill Thomas, editor-in-chief at Doubleday, has been promoted to the new post of v-p, editor-in-chief of Doubleday Broadway. In his new role, Thomas takes over the top editorial spot at Broadway, succeeding Gerry Howard, who is stepping down as editorial director of the unit to become v-p, editor-at-large for Doubleday Broadway. Thomas and Howard will both report to Steve Rubin, president and publisher of the Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group.

In his memo to employees, Rubin said Thomas's "first priority will be to continue the editorial direction and independence of the Doubleday and Broadway lists." To help him direct Broadway, Thomas has appointed Stacy Creamer deputy editorial director. Creamer joined Doubleday last year from Penguin Putnam as executive editor, a role she will retain.

In announcing Howard's decision to drop his administrative duties at Broadway, Rubin praised him for his "monumental efforts" in bringing editorial stability, and profitability, to Broadway following the departure of Broadway founder Bill Shinker. Howard will now focus on acquiring a wide range of fiction and nonfiction for Doubleday Broadway.
