Hanukkah Notes

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 9/23/2002

Creators of novelty formats for other holidays now approach the Festival of Lights. David A. Carter presents Chanukah Bugs: A Pop-up Celebration. Each spread features a flap designed to resemble a gift box, one for each of the eight nights. Among the pop-up "presents": a Dizzy Dreidel Bug that spins and Menorah Bugs "lit" by silver-paper flames. (S&S/Little Simon, $10.95 ages 3-7 ISBN 0-689-81860-2; Oct.)

Holographic enhancements hide behind gatefold flaps in The Hanukkah Mice by Ronne Randall, illus. by Maggie Kneen, in a format adopted by the artist in The Christmas Surprise. In the rhyming text, a mouse family searches a human home for the "wondrous Hanukkah lights." (Chronicle, $15.95 ages 2-6 ISBN 0-8118-3623-1; Nov.)

In the paperback Happy Hanukkah, Biscuit! by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, illus. by Pat Schories, gatefold flaps on every spread show the puppy introducing mild holiday havoc into each scene. (HarperFestival, $6.99 paper 20p ages 2-6 ISBN 0-694-01525-3; Oct.)

Similar in format to Chronicle's Crafty Girl series, Happening Hanukkah: Creative Ways to Celebrate by Debra Mostow Zakarin, illus. by Amanda Haley, describes how to make various presents, from gift coupons (promising such services as breakfast in bed) to hand-painted sweatshirts. The author also provides instructions for making candy dreidels, lighting the menorah, and more. (Grosset & Dunlap, $5.99 paper 64p ages 8-12 ISBN 0-448-42869-5; Aug.)
