Even Stephen...

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 10/7/2002

...has a saturation point, it seems; witness the headline on Entertainment Weekly's September 27 issue, "Stephen King Calls It Quits." ("I've killed enough of the world's trees," he tells EW's interviewer.) Not surprisingly, this King's making his exit with a flourish—another bestseller that jumps to the top of the charts in its first week on sale. September 24 was Scribner's laydown date for From a Buick 8, with a 1.25 million first printing. In addition to the EW cover, other components helping to fuel sales have included a Today interview, billboard ads in New York and Detroit (Motor City, get it?) and signings at Barnes & Noble and Borders stores. Though this King's had quite a reign, we've surely not heard the last of him; indeed, a sidebar to EW's story notes several "projects in the works." Stay tuned.
