Max Reinhardt

Max Reinhardt, the distinguished publisher of George Bernard Shaw and Graham Greene, died in London on November 19. He was 86. Reinhardt began his publishing career in the years following World War II by turning his family's import-export business toward publishing. He acquired HFL Publishers, a small textbook firm, and soon began publishing Shaw's romantic correspondence with the actress Ellen Terry. In 1957, Reinhardt acquired the Bodley Head publishing house and made Greene its director. Before long, the Bodley Head became Greene's publisher. Later, the Bodley Head published the novel Cancer Ward by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. The Bodley Head eventually was acquired by Random House, and Reinhardt left the firm. He remained in publishing as the head of HFL, which he renamed Reinhardt Books, and also continued to publish under the Nonesuch Press imprint.
