Big Buy for Small House

Small literary publisher MacAdam/Cage in San Francisco paid its largest advance ever, well into six figures, to secure world rights to a first novel called The Time Traveler's Daughter by Audrey Niffenegger. The buy was made at auction by the house's Patrick Walsh from agent Joseph Regal at Regal Literary, and the book will be its lead title for next fall. It is the story of a marriage in which the husband periodically moves into another time zone, so he is sometimes much older than his wife, sometimes younger, and the effect the changes have upon their passionate relationship. After the buy, MacAdam/Cage publisher David Poindexter sold paperback rights, on a preempt, to Andre Bernard at Harcourt. Movie rights are being handled by Howard Sanders and Richard Green at UTA, and Chandler Crawford is selling foreign.
