A First from Tan: Nonfiction

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 1/13/2003

Bestselling novelist Amy Tan is putting together a kind of memoir, embracing some of her essays and speeches, to create her first nonfiction book, after four novels and two children's books. It's called The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings, and was bought by Putnam publisher Carole Baron for the U.S., Canada and open market from Coast agent Sandy Dijsktra. The book will include stories of her ancestors, and of her own life as an author (and occasional rock star), as well as reflections on her writing and the impact of fate on her life; it will appear in hardcover this fall, followed by a Penguin paperback in 2004.
