Freedgood Dead at 85

Anne Freedgood, a veteran editor with extensive periods at Doubleday and Random House, died December 15 in Amherst, Mass., of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was 85. Freedgood, who served in the Office of War Information in WWII and was in London during the blitz, worked as a reporter and journalist before joining Doubleday in 1958, where she worked for the fledgling Anchor Books. She moved to Random House in 1970 and worked there until she retired in 1987, though she continued thereafter to work as a part-time editor-at-large for Summit, Harcourt and Morrow. Among the many prominent authors with whom she worked over the years were John Barth, Harold Bloom, Mary Gordon, Daniel Hoffman, Carl Sagan, Toni Bentley, Suzanne Farrell, Jonathan Miller and Vikram Seth.
