Ellen Harris Named to Head Aperture

by Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 1/20/2003

Aperture, the book publisher and nonprofit resource on fine photography, has named Ellen Harris, executive director of the Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, N.J., to be its new executive director. Aperture has been without an executive director since the death of Paul Gottlieb in June 2002.

Aperture's executive director previously managed the book publishing program, Aperture magazine and the organization's day-to-day operations. Now Aperture has moved to create a separate position to manage its book programs and last August hired Robert Morton, formerly of Abrams, to run the book unit. Morton will report to Harris.

Harris's biggest task, she said, will be raising Aperture's profile. "We need people to be more aware of Aperture: its books, its magazines and its exhibitions. It will be a marketing challenge."
