A High-Flying Anniversary

On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright lifted off from Kitty Hawk to make their first successful sustained flight in the airplane they had built themselves. Due to land in bookstores well in time for the 100th anniversary of this historic flight are more than a dozen books celebrating these brothers' remarkable accomplishment.

From Crown comes First to Fly: How Wilbur & Orville Wright Invented the Airplane by Peter Busby, with paintings by David Craig, which tracks the siblings' trial-and-error aviation experiments from their boyhood years in Dayton, Ohio. Another picture book that traces the steps leading up to the Wrights' invention is The Wright Brothers by Pamela Duncan Edwards, illustrated by Henry Cole, due from Hyperion. In a book from Little, Brown, My Brothers' Flying Machine: Wilbur, Orville, and Me by Jane Yolen, with art by Jim Burke, the author writes in the voice of the flying duo's sister, Katharine, offering her perspective on her siblings' feat. Also focusing on this girl is Richard Maurer's The Wright Sister: Katharine Wright and Her Famous Brothers, a biography from Roaring Brook Press aimed at readers 10-14.

Another title targeting this age group is Airborne: A Photobiography of Wilbur and Orville Wright by Mary Collins, a National Geographic release that presents photos chronicling this pair's determination to tinker and test until they got it right. From Chicago Review Press comes The Wright Brothers for Kids: How They Invented the Airplane by Mary Kay Carson, which rounds up facts about this invention as well as projects. Recounting the first flight in an unusual format is One Fine Day: A Radio Play by Elizabeth Van Steenwyk, illustrated by Bill Farnsworth, to be published by Eerdmans.

A handful of publishers will be issuing books about these soaring siblings as installments of series. Among the inaugural volumes in Crabtree's The Story of Flight series is The Wright Brothers and Other Pioneers of Flight, due out simultaneously in cloth and paper. New to DK's DK Readers is another dual edition, First Flight: The Wright Brothers. Scholastic Reference's In Their Own Words series offers The Wright Brothers by George Sullivan, a paperback that draws from such primary sources as the brothers' journal entries, letters and speeches. Two titles from Gallopade help launch new series: Carole Marsh's Orville & Wilbur Step Out into the Sky! will be released under Carole Marsh Books; and The Wright Brothers: Two Brothers, One Dream: Let's Fly joins Marsh's 1000 Readers series. And HarperCollins's I Can Read Books will release a reprint of First Flight: The Story of Tom Tate and the Wright Brothers by George Shea, with illustrations by Don Bolognese.

All of which should keep aspiring inventors and armchair aviators happily occupied-and give them an excuse for having their heads in the clouds!

Harrius Potter et al.

Harry Potter will soon get a classical education as he begins studying his spells in Latin. Aspiring young classicists can chant along, courtesy of Bloomsbury USA's July release, Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis, a Latin translation of the British version of J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter novel. Also due the same month is a Welsh version of the novel (Harri Potter maen yr Athronydd)-and Greek and Irish translations will appear in 2004.

This young wizard is not the first beloved hero to expand his linguistic skills into the classical arena. Over recent years, tales about Winnie-the-Pooh and The Cat and the Hat have also appeared in Latin. The latter was the star of Cattus Petasatus, published in 2000 by Bolchazy-Carducci of Wauconda, Ill. This spring that publisher will add two new titles to its I Am Reading Latin series. Due are What Color Is It?/ Qho colore est? and Who Loves Me?/Quis me amat? by Marie Carducci Bolchazy. Aimed at readers ages four to eight, both of these illustrated books include an English translation and explain the word derivations. They're bound to catch the eye of parents already worried about prepping their young scholars for the SATs.

Spring Celebrations

This season's listings contain a sprinkling of titles marking notable publishing milestones. In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the publication of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's tale of the boy from Asteroid B-612 with a deep understanding of love, friendship and responsibility, Harcourt is issuing The Little Prince: 60th Anniversary Edition, translated by Richard Howard. This gift book includes a cloth slipcase, a satin ribbon bookmark and a bookplate. The publisher's Red Wagon imprint brings the prince's wisdom to youngest readers with Introducing the Little Prince, a set of four board books inspired by the original tale and illustrated with de Saint-Exupéry's art.

It has been half a century since children first met the endearing, diminutive characters introduced by Mary Norton in The Borrowers. In celebration, Harcourt will reissue Odyssey paperback editions of this classic, as well as its sequels: The Borrowers Afield, The Borrowers Afloat, The Borrowers Aloft: Plus the Short Tale of Poor Stainless and The Borrowers Avenged. These editions contain the original interior art by Beth and Joe Krush and sport new cover illustrations by Marla Frazee.

Also due from Harcourt are reissues of Carl Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories and More Rootabaga Stories, issued in observance of the 125th anniversary of this Pulitzer Prize- winning author's birth. To be released simultaneously as Young Classics hardcovers and Odyssey paperbacks, the collections (first published in 1922 and 1923, respectively) retain the original interior illustrations by Maud and Miska Petersham and feature new jacket and cover art by Kurt Cyrus.

This spring, the folks at HarperCollins are commemorating the 40th anniversary of two landmark picture books. It has been four decades since Maurice Sendak first published his Caldecott-winning Where the Wild Things Are, and the publisher is promoting the occasion with a 40th-anniversary event kit and posters. Also appearing first in 1963 was Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back, the tale about a lion that turns the tables on greedy hunters, which launched Shel Silverstein's career. The company plans a national marketing campaign to celebrate this milestone.

From Simon & Schuster come 35th-anniversary editions of the titles in The Tripods trilogy: The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead and The Pool of Fire, which make available for the first time in this country the revised texts of these science-fiction novels by English author John Christopher. And Puffin is celebrating the 20th birthday of Hank the Cowdog by releasing The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog, 20th Anniversary Edition by John R. Erickson, illustrated by Gerald L. Holmes. Happy anniversary to one and all!
