Lennertz Leaving ABA for HC

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 2/17/2003

Carl Lennertz, the driving force behind the American Booksellers Association's Book Sense program, is leaving the association to take the position of v-p, marketing, at HarperCollins.

In the newly created position, Lennertz will oversee the marketing plans for the flagship HC imprint's list of 130 titles a year. Lennertz, who will join HC March 17, will report to Carie Freimuth, senior v-p and associate publisher of the general books group. Christine Caruso, director of marketing for HC, will report to Lennertz. Before joining the ABA in 1999, Lennertz worked as v-p, marketing, for the Knopf Group and, later, as associate publisher at Little, Brown.

Instead of replacing Lennertz, the ABA has split his duties among four ABA staff members. Mark Nichols becomes director of Book Sense marketing; Dan Cullen assumes the position of editor-in-chief of the Book Sense 76 lists; Jill Perlstein is promoted to director of marketing; and Meg Zelickson Smith takes over as deputy director of Book Sense marketing. All four will continue with their present responsibilities in addition to assuming their new Book Sense roles.
