Godoff's Ghostly Buy

The first significant buy by Ann Godoff for her new imprint at Penguin is of a book that traces the investigations done over a period of 30 years by psychologist/philosopher William James into the existence of ghosts. It's called The Ghost Hunters by Pulitzer Prize–winning science writer Deborah Blum (The Monkey Wars), and Godoff won it in a best-bid auction run by agent Suzanne Gluck at William Morris. James, with a group of fellow scientists, obsessively pursued the question of whether spiritual phenomena were real, and in the end decided that 5% of the cases he examined offered irrefutable evidence of ghostly visitations. Godoff got North American rights, and Gluck reports strong interest already from the U.K. and foreign buyers; the book is expected to be published in late 2005.
