Christopher Awards Presented

The 54th Annual Christopher Awards were presented last month in New York City. The awards honor books, films, TV and other media that signal individual worth and the power to positively shape the world.

Adult book prize winners: Choosing Naia: A Family's Journey by Mitchell Zuckoff (Beacon); The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede (ReganBooks); Fatal Passage: The Story of John Rae, the Arctic Hero Time Forgot by Ken McGoogan (Carroll & Graf); Five Past Midnight in Bhopal by Dominique Lapierre and Javier Moro (Warner); Jim's Last Summer: Lessons on Living from a Dying Priest by Teresa McGee (Orbis); and Standing on Holy Ground: A Triumph over Hate Crime in the Deep South by Sandra Johnson (St. Martin's).

Books for Young People prize winners: Mole and the Baby Bird by Marjory Newman; illus. by Patrick Benson (Bloomsbury); Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters from Obedience School by Mark Teague (Scholastic); The Ugly Princess and the Wise Fool by Margaret Gray, illus. by Randy Cecil (Holt); Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff (Random); and Left for Dead by Pete Nelson (Delacorte).
