Tor Adds Children's Imprint
by Joy Bean -- Publishers Weekly, 3/17/2003
Tor Books has announced the addition of Tor Teen,
a new imprint aimed at science fiction and fantasy readers age 13 and up.
In January 2002 the company launched Starscape, another children's imprint, aimed at readers 10 and up, but with this new line they hope to target the specific interests of an older, more mature audience.
The first books from the list, which will debut in July, will be culled from the adult backlist, including titles from acclaimed authors such as Emma Bull, Steven Gould and Jane Yolen. The emphasis will be on choosing titles that have been honored with awards or have high teen appeal.
By starting this imprint, editor Jonathan Schmidt hopes to "reach out to a new generation of readers just at the point at which their own lives make science fiction and fantasy meaningful. We don't want to leave readers behind."
While the first season will be mostly reprints, Schmidt said, "that mix will change as the teen line itself grows and matures." A promotion for the launch of Tor Teen is in the works, but plans have not been finalized.
