Publishers Look To Save Trees

More than 20 publishers have joined in a commitment to use more recycled paper to publish their books and decrease the use of paper produced from old-growth forests. The effort is sponsored by the Green Press Initiative, a nonprofit organization devoted to saving trees.
Among the 20 publishers who have joined the initiative are Cornell University Press, Newmarket Press, Chelsea Green, New World Library and others. According to the Green Press Initiative, the book publishing industry uses more than a million tons of paper each year, the equivalent of about 25 million trees.
A spokesperson for the Green Press Initiative told PW that although most publishers believe the paper used to print their books is coming from tree farms, that may not always be true. "There's no resistance by publishers to using recycled paper," she said. "It's a big job for a publisher to change paper policy, but it can be done."
