A Balancing Act

The latest selection of Good Morning America's Read This! Book Club, announced June 5, is Samaritan, a January Knopf release by acclaimed novelist Richard Price (Clockers, Freedomland, etc.). Following GMA's customary format, the new selection was chosen by the club that read the previous selection—the Officers' Spouses Club in 29 Palms, Calif., recommended the new pick to the Balancing the Books Book Club in Westwood, Mass. (whose members are all employees of a local accounting firm). Knopf reports 80,000 copies in print pre-GMA and is going back for an additional 70,000. It's interesting to note that as this column went to press, seven hours after GMA's announcement, Samaritan had climbed from 31,000 to 108 on Amazon.com.
