Chapters on the Move

by Judith Rosen -- Publishers Weekly, 6/16/2003

Chapters: A Literary Bookstore in Washington, D.C., is about to enter a new chapter. The 17-year-old bookstore is moving from its present location on K Street to 11th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue this month. The new store, which is almost the same size as the current one—2,300 square feet—is well located for drawing authors; it is across the street from the offices for the National Endowment for the Arts. "We wanted to be in a better location. K Street has gotten, as one of our customers says, 'a little bit stale,' " explained Terri Merz, who co-owns the store with Steve Mozer. Customers have signed up to bring trucks and strong backs on moving weekend and have been supporting the store's fund-raising readings, including one in honor of the late poet Agha Shahid Ali and one for Dalkey Archive's reissue of Stanley Elkin's George Mills. "We've been very happy with our fundraising efforts," Merz said.
