Figures released by the AAP show April sales fell in eight of the 13 categories tracked by the association. Adult hardcover sales were off 33.7%, while trade paperback sales declined 7.2%. Sales were not much better in the children's segments, where hardcover sales were down 16.4% and paperback sales fell 13.1%. For the year to date, sales were down 28.7% in adult hardcover and 9.9% in trade paperback, while children's hardcover sales were down 23.1% and paperback sales declined 4.6%. Bright spots in April were mass market paperback, with sales ahead 22.8%, and e-books, where (small) sales jumped 268%. In education, the elhi segment continued to post solid gains, with April sales up 11.7% and sales in the first four months of the year increasing 12.7%. In the college segment, as is typical in April, returns exceeded gross sales in the month.
