M-H Education Revamps Supplementary Unit

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 6/30/2003

McGraw-Hill Education has restructured its alternative basal and supplementary publishing operations into a single unit that will be known as the McGraw-Hill Learning Group. The new organizational structure, which goes into effect July 1, combines the operations of SRA/McGraw-Hill, Wright Group/McGraw-Hill and McGraw-Hill/Contemporary.

The new group will consist of two divisions, SRA/McGraw-Hill and Wright Group/McGraw-Hill. Peter Sayeski, who headed the old SRA/M-H division, has been named president of the Learning Group, reporting to M-H Education executive v-p Bill Oldsey. Sayeski and SRA executive Jim McNeely are serving as acting executive v-ps of the SRA and Wright units, respectively, but an M-HE spokesperson said a search is on to find permanent leaders for the two divisions. Steve Van Thournout, president of Contemporary, has been named publisher of the newly formed Wright Group.

According to the M-HE spokesperson, the restructuring will better align products that complement each other within the same divisions. The reorganization is also aimed at improving the performance of the Wright Group, which has not lived up to expectations since it was acquired from the Tribune Company, along with Contemporary, about three years ago. As a result of the reorganization, 17 financial and administrative positions in the Wright Group's Bothell, Wash., headquarters are being eliminated.
