Random Buys Two by Fuentes

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 7/14/2003

The distinguished Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes has many books in print in the U.S., where Farrar Straus & Giroux has been his primary publisher, but has just signed a deal for his next two that shifts him to Kate Medina at Random House. Medina took North American hardcover and paperback rights in a collection of personal essays and a novel from agent Carl Brandt, and will publish the first next year. It's called This I Believe and collects a number of Fuentes's observations on love, religion, politics, Latin America and revolution, as well as on people and books that have affected his life. It has already been a bestseller in France and Spain. The novel, The Eagle's Throne, is about a love affair between a brilliant woman and man who has ambitions to become president of Mexico; it delves deeply into that country's politics and role in the world.
