Tantalizingly Tangled Tales

When the prince asks Rapunzel to drop down her curly locks, she tosses from the window her dirty socks. Instead of the silky tresses he requests, he receives lacy dresses. And kids will certainly chuckle over the clothing item she throws him when he simply shouts "hair." The duo overcomes their communication troubles, of course, in Leah Wilcox's Falling for Rapunzel—one of several new books that present playful spins on familiar stories. This December picture book from Putnam features art by Lydia Monks.

Another spin-off starring this longhaired lovely, Rapunzel: A Groovy Fairy Tale, sets the story in the 1970s, when bellbottoms, disco balls and, yes, long hair were part of the scenery. Written by Lynn Roberts and illustrated by her brother, David Roberts, this Abrams book has Rapunzel living in the penthouse of a building whose elevator is broken, leaving the girl's aunt to use her niece's hair to come and go. But when the rock prince of her dreams climbs up her tresses one day, the lonely girl's days of sitting on her shag carpet and listening to her LPs by herself are at last over.

Another well-known heroine gets a makeover in Candlewick's Cinderlily: A Floral Fairy Tale by Christine Tagg, illus. by David Ellwand. She is a long-suffering lily with faded petals until magic transforms her and she is whisked off to the ball in a butterfly-drawn carriage. No wallflower she, the newly blossomed gal has the time of her life, much to the dismay of her pansy-faced stepsisters.

A panoply of fairytale characters arrive on the scene in Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Book?, Lauren Child's tale of a boy who, after scribbling on and cutting up the pages of his book of fairy tales, falls into the book and must contend with a petulant Goldilocks, an angry wicked stepmother and a disappointed Cinderella. Hyperion will release this picture book in October. And more familiar faces emerge in Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook by Michael Garland, a Dutton book. When a teacher reads aloud to her class, the storybook characters spring to life and the students are transported to locales of make-believe.

Yo Ho! Plenty of Pirate Lore and Loot

Youngsters looking for swashbuckling adventure can sail the high seas next season with an assortment of pirates. Jeremy Jacob, the hero of How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long, does just that when he is invited on board Braid Beard's ship, where he quickly settles into the rowdy pirate routine, throwing manners to the wind and having the time of his life. But the boy rethinks his decision when he discovers what pirates don't do: there's no reading bedtime stories and nobody tucks kids in. Due from Harcourt, the book is illustrated by the Caldecott Honor–winning illustrator David Shannon.

Two young women set sail in Pirates! by Celia Rees, a novel on Bloomsbury's fall list. At the start of the 18th century, the daughter of a wealthy merchant and her former plantation embark from Jamaica on a trading ship recently hijacked by pirates and are willingly swept into a life of travel and adventure.

Pirates of the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean are some of the rogues profiled in another fall title, due from Enchanted Lion Books. In Real Pirates: Over 30 True Stories of Seafaring Sculduggery, Clare Hibbert compiles tales of pirate pillage and plunder around the globe. John James illustrates. And from Roaring Brook comes What if You Met a Pirate? by Jan Adkins, which presents a treasure trove of pirate lore and facts about these buccaneers' lives and ships.
