Happy Anniversary!

The upcoming season's harvest of books includes a bountiful crop of titles issued to mark a publishing milestone.

He'll never grow up, and this star of page, stage and screen will never lose his boyish appeal. Peter Pan turns 100 this year, and Holt is commemorating the occasion with the release of Peter Pan: 100th Anniversary Edition by J.M. Barrie, illus. by Michael Hague, a redesigned ediation of this backlist staple. Born in Scotland in 1860, Barrie was a successful playwright who wrote many works for the London stage and six novels for adults. Peter Pan is the only text he wrote for children.

Mary Norton's tale of the diminutive family that lives under the kitchen floorboards and borrows from the "human beans" above has charmed children for five decades. Harcourt this fall will issue The Borrowers: 50th Anniversary Gift Edition, which includes a new foreword by Leonard S. Marcus, Diana Stanley's illustrations from the original British edition, a letter from Norton describing the origins of the novel and a never-before-published sketch of the book's characters, drawn by the author.

Well before novels about a boy wizard topped children's bestseller lists, Diane Duane penned So You Want to Be a Wizard, the inaugural volume in Harcourt's Young Wizards series. The publisher this month releases a 20th Anniversary Edition of this novel, which features a new afterword by Duane and a short story starring protagonists Kit and Nita, entitled "Uptown Local." Due out in October is the series' seventh hardcover novel, Wizard's Holiday; a paperback reprint of the sixth book, A Wizard Alone; and Magic Carpet paperback reissues of the series' first three books, which in addition to the debut title include Deep Wizardry and High Wizardry.

Peggy Parish's Amelia Bedelia has been bumbling her way through life for a full 40 years. Greenwillow is celebrating the literal-minded housekeeper's birthday in October, when it will publish Amelia Bedelia 40th Anniversary Library Box Set, featuring paperback editions of Amelia Bedelia, Amelia Bedelia and the Surprise Shower and Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia. The ageless Amelia "helps out" at the library in a new misadventure, Amelia Bedelia, Bookworm by Herman Parish (Peggy Parish's nephew), illus. by Lynn Sweat. And fall will bring Amelia Bedelia and the Christmas List by Herman Parish, illus. by Sweat, a gatefold tale in which Amelia checks her list twice with predictably disastrous results. But not likely to be a disaster at the cash register: in her productive 40 years of life, more than 20 million copies of books touting her name have been sold. It has been two decades since an unsuspecting Russell Crannaker bought a curious ring in The Monster's Ring by Bruce Coville, illus. by Katherine Coville, which launched the Magic Shop series. Aladdin will mark the occasion next month with a revised and expanded 20th Anniversary Edition of the novel.

And kids have been happily I-Spy-ing for 10 years, a benchmark that Scholastic's Cartwheel imprint is touting with its September release of I Spy Mystery: A Book of Picture Riddles, 10th Anniversary Edition by Jean Marzollo, with photos by Walter Wick, which contains a new "birthday riddle." This eye-catching series—whose in-print total tops 20 million copies—has inspired a series of easy readers, the latest of which is a July release, I Spy a School Bus.

The Focus Is Art

A sextet of fall books approach art appreciation from inventive angles. In The Shape Game, Anthony Browne chronicles a family's visit to an art museum, where they interpret, respond to—and even imagine themselves part of—a number of paintings. Due from Farrar, Straus & Giroux, the book grew out of Browne's work with inner-city children at the Tate Britain gallery in London, where as writer- and illustrator-in-residence he taught literacy using the resources within the gallery.

Babar and Celeste turn the old Celesteville train station into an art gallery in Babar's Museum of Art by Laurent de Brunhoff, scheduled for September release from Abrams. The couple's donations to the new museum include elephant-filled versions of familiar masterpieces. The publisher has ordered a 100,000-copy first printing for this title, which includes a pull-out poster.

Peter H. Reynolds offers an invitation to self-expression in The Dot, a Candlewick picture book starring a child who is stymied when her art teacher instructs the class, "Just make a mark and see where it takes you." When at the end of class, the piece of paper in front of her is still blank, she takes her paintbrush and makes a frustrated jab. This "dot" then launches the child on a journey of self-discovery.

Youngsters are challenged to search for more than 200 minute details hidden in full-color reproductions of celebrated works of art in a new Chronicle release, Art Up Close: From Ancient to Modern by Claire d'Harcourt. Readers can lift flaps to find the solutions to each puzzle and to learn the stories behind the paintings. Author Bob Raczka encourages kids to appreciate art with more than just their eyes in More Than Meets the Eye: Seeing Art with All Five Senses, a fall paperback from Millbrook. And the Petit Connoisseur board-book series from Tricycle kicks off with Art, a visual introduction to such concepts as Dada, cubism and Bauhaus, by Karen Salmansohn, illus. by Brian Stauffer.
