Sterling Inks Deal with AARP

by Jim Milliot -- Publishers Weekly, 7/28/2003

In its first major copublishing deal since it was acquired by Barnes & Noble, Sterling Publishing has signed a multiyear agreement with the AARP to publish a line of books bearing the AARP trademark. At least eight books per year are expected to be published under the partnership, a mix of trade paperbacks and hardcovers, with the AARP logo appearing on the cover. The first titles are due out next spring. Topics will range from financial issues to mind-enhancement techniques.

Linda McCutcheon, publishing director of AARP, said that the association has done some limited publishing, but nothing as extensive as envisioned in the agreement with Sterling. "We're hoping to build a solid backlist that can bring books of value to our members," McCutcheon said. McCutcheon said she was aware that some bookstores may not carry the AARP titles because of Sterling's ties to B&N, but decided that Sterling's strength in outlets outside the bookstore channel "was a reasonable tradeoff." She said that even if Borders stores in areas where there is a heavy 50+ population, such as Florida, don't want to carry the titles, she is confident the books will still be widely distributed. "I'm comfortable with my decision," she said.
