Big Deal for Seth Memoir

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 8/4/2003

A memoir by Vikram Seth (A Suitable Boy), after a sale to Time Warner in England reported at around $2 million, also made a very substantial sale to Harper's Terry Karten here, who was the editor on the author's original highly successful novel. She bought U.S. rights, including first serial and audio, to Two Lives and will publish in 2005. The sale, in a hotly contested auction, was made here by the author's agent in the U.S., Irene Skolnick. The book is partly the story of the author's own early life, partly the remarkable one of his Indian great-uncle, married to a German-Jewish woman, and ranges from India in the days of the British Raj to Nazi Germany before WWII and on to postwar Britain. Seth's second novel, An Equal Music, was published by Broadway.
