A Close Look at Religion

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 8/4/2003

A recent Op Ed piece in the New York Times by noted philosopher Daniel Dennett, in which he urged nonreligious people to oppose the increasing role of religion in American politics, drew such a large response that he was encouraged to develop it into a book, and the result is Breaking the Spell, which will examine the ways in which religion can intrude into our political life, urging a closer examination of its lures. Viking's Paul Slovak bought North American rights from agent John Brockman and will publish in fall 2005. Another recent buy by a busy Slovak was a memoir of the organic farming life by poet Scott Chaskey. This is called This Common Ground: Four Seasons on an Organic Farm and describes in lyrical terms Chaskey's experience running his farm on eastern Long Island. This was also a North American buy, from Paul Bresnick, in affiliation with Carlisle & Company.
