Nine in the Hole

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 8/11/2003

A record nine new mass markets land on the paperback charts this week; all but one can be categorized as romance and/or romantic fiction, and they boast some impressive numbers. Still, none was able to knock Seabiscuit or Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution off their top perches. Landing in the #3 spot is Tom Clancy's Red Rabbit, launched by Berkley with a two million–copy first printing. Warner's Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson comes with a 1,575,000 printing. Luanne Rice takes the #15 spot with The Perfect Summer; Bantam went to press four times, bringing the in-print figure close to 900,000 copies. J.A. Jance's Partner in Crime from Avon has more than 665,000 copies in print after three trips to press, and Avon also reports more than 325,000 copies in print for One Night of Scandal for Teresa Medeiros. Pocket Star launched Karen Robards's Whispers at Midnight with a 610,000 first printing, while Ballantine reports The Apprentice by Tess Gerritsen has 375,000 copies. Zebra's Say No to Joe? by Lori Foster has more than 200,000 copies in print. Figures from Silhouette were unavailable for Sullivan's Woman by Nora Roberts; the prolific author also landed another reissue on the trade paperback list—Mysterious, from Harlequin, with about 600,000 copies.
