A Magical Mystery Tour

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 9/8/2003

That's what author Christine Wicker promises in her new book, Not in Kansas Any More: Inside the Hidden World of America's Magical Community, just bought for a solid six figures by Gideon Weil at Harper San Francisco. In the book, Wicker—whose Lily Dale, about a town whose inhabitants talked to the dead, struck a similar note of contemporary strangeness—tours the many manifestations of the current American fascination with otherworldly doings: witchcraft, potions, voodoo, wizards and spells. Weil bought North American rights from agent Jandy Nelson at Manus & Associates on the Coast and plans to publish—when else?—at Halloween, two years from now.
