Museums to Display Book Art

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 9/22/2003

Two artists will have art from their recently published children's books featured in an exhibit at museums this fall and winter.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is currently featuring a retrospective exhibition on The Art of Romare Bearden. The exhibition will run until January 4, 2004, where it will then travel on to San Francisco, Dallas, New York and Atlanta. Two Bearden children's books are being published this month: Li'l Dan the Drummer Boy (S&S), a recently discovered book written and illustrated by Bearden; and Romare Bearden: Collage of Memories (Abrams) by Jan Greenberg. Laurent de Brunhoff, son of Babar creator Jean de Brunhoff, launched his most recent book, Babar's Museum of Art, with a book signing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Over 500 people attended the event, with almost 400 books being sold. The book reinterprets, with elephant-inspired illustrations, several celebrated pieces of art.

The artist will sign books at various other museums, including the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Conn., and the Smithsonian.

Original art from the book is being featured in a show of its own at the Art Institute of Chicago, from September 27 through February 1, 2004.
