Lightning Buys B&N POD Facility

by Jim Milliot -- Publishers Weekly, 9/29/2003

Lightning Source has acquired Barnes & Noble's print-on-demand facility that the retailer established in Memphis. According to Lightning president Kirby Best, the company is in the middle of integrating B&N's system into its own operation in LaVergne, Tenn. The process includes moving files of publishers that agree to the switch from B&N to Lightning.

Joe Gonnella, B&N's v-p, inventory management and publisher relations, said the sale of the facility was a "tactical adjustment." He said B&N will work with Lightning to "communicate to publishers that POD is a cost-effective way to broaden their offerings."
