S&S Nixes Chinese 'Living History'

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 1/5/2004

Simon & Schuster has terminated the right of the Chinese publishing house Yilin Press to continue to publish Sen. Hillary Clinton's Living History in China. S&S took the action after Yilin refused to restore all the sections of the book it had deleted; in September, S&S had threatened to terminate Yilin's Chinese rights after it learned that Yilin had cut negative references to China.

In a letter to Yilin, Carolyn Reidy, president of the S&S adult publishing group, wrote that even though Yilin was willing to restore some of the sections that were deleted, S&S was terminating its agreement because Yilin was unable to publish "a faithful and accurate translation" of the book. It was unclear whether Yilin had agreed to stop selling its edition, which has 200,000 copies in print.
