From Rags to Riches

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 1/12/2004

Talk about enticing titles—it's no wonder that The Automatic Millionaire: A Powerful One-Step Plan to Live and Finish Rich is hitting our nonfiction list. And, given Broadway Books' publicity plans, it seems certain to climb higher than today's #12 spot. Interviews with author David Bach on Weekend Today, CBS Early Show and Oprah (a full hour) are being reinforced by TV and radio satellite tours as well as by Bach's appearances later this month on CNN and MSNBC. According to Broadway publicity director David Drake, the publisher went back to press four times (copies in print: 217,000) before the book's December 23 pub date on the strength of "booksellers' enthusiastic response to early confirmed national media." Excellent first-week sales, Drake noted, were spurred by an ongoing AOL promotion (for which Bach serves as money coach), as well as the author's reputation—a former contributing editor to Smart Money magazine, he's been featured in numerous national publications—and the success of his earlier national bestsellers, Smart Women Finish Rich and Smart Couples Finish Rich.
