Oprah Does It Again

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 2/2/2004

The book industry's greatest champion started off 2004 with what looks to be a winning pick for her classics book club. On January 22, she selected Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, hailing it as an entry to "a world where the lines of magic and reality are blurred, so stay with it. It's not like anything you've ever read before." The book was first published in Spanish in 1967 and was the first work in that language to become a U.S. bestseller. HarperCollins published One Hundred Years in English in 1970, and it has gone on to sell more than 30 million copies in 37 languages. Since the book club announcement, the publisher has shipped more than 700,000 copies of the trade paperback and 20,000 copies of the hardcover edition. The house has gone back to press on its entire García Márquez backlist.
