Authors on the Air: Peter Sis on Tibet

by Staff, PW Daily for Booksellers -- Publishers Weekly, 2/2/2004

Tonight Charlie Rose speaks with oracle Paul Auster, author of Oracle Night (Holt, $23; HarperAudio unabridged cassette, $34.95). PW called the book "artful, ingenious."

Today Morning Edition interviewed Peter Sis, author of Tibet Through the Red Box (FSG, $25). PW's view: "In this visually enticing, magically appealing, oversized volume, Czechoslovakian-born illustrator Sis applies his considerable gifts to painting a spellbinding portrait of his father's experiences in Tibet, where he was sent in the 1950s to instruct the Chinese in documentary filmmaking."

On Sunday Weekend Edition noodles the numbers with New York Times reporter David Cay Johnston, author of Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich--and Cheat Everybody Else (Portfolio, $25.95). PW's accounting: "The journalistic legwork informs every page of this expose‚ of the ways in which, he says, America's taxation system is stacked in favor of the wealthy."

Sunday Weekend Edition also talks about Hitchhiker: A Biography of Douglas Adams by M.J. Simpson (Justin, Charles, $27.95). PW enjoyed Simpson's ride, stating, "An engaging yet straightforward portrait of the phenomenally successful writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and its series of spinoff books and radio plays), the book is informed by interviews with many of Adams's close friends and associates (Adams died in 2001 at age 49)."

On Monday the Today Show begins a series called "In the Middle," for which it discusses "team parenting" with Arthur Kornhaber. His latest title is The Grandparent Solution: Building a Family Team for Practical, Emotional, and Financial Success (Jossey-Bass, $16.95).

On Tuesday on the Today Show, Kathryn Black discusses her new "baby," Mothering Without a Map: The Search for the Good Mother Within (Viking Penguin, $24.95). PW's comments: "While psychological jargon like 'allomother' or 'insecure attachment' can obscure Black's point, her interview subjects offer other women afraid of motherhood reassurance that it is possible to be a good mother without having experienced good mothering."
