¡Viva Albom!

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 2/16/2004

Because of the number of requests from fans, Hyperion is publishing the Spanish-language edition of The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom this May. It is the publisher's first Spanish-language title. The announced first printing is 50,000, which is a sizable number for a Spanish-language book (these copies are for the U.S. and Puerto Rico). The Da Vinci Code currently has about 300,000 copies in print in Spanish; about 10% were aimed at the U.S. market and the rest were for Mexico and Latin America. Urano, the Miami-based publisher of the Spanish Da Vinci has 10,000 more copies earmarked for stateside. The Spanish edition of Albom's book will be a main selection of the Mosaico Book Club and will be serialized in Vista magazine (circulation is about one million). As for the English-language edition, it's up to 3.55 million copies in print after 12 trips to press. Last fall, the first printing was 775,000 copies; by September 23, Hyperion had 1,040,000 copies in print.
