Roth Imagines President Lindbergh

A new novel by Pulitzer Prize–winning author Philip Roth imagines an America governed by President Charles Lindbergh during WWII, putting Jews in this country in fear of their lives; it was signed at Houghton Mifflin by publisher Janet Silver. The book, the author's first since The Dying Animal in 2001, is called The Plot Against America and envisages a scenario in which the arch-isolationist and anti-Semitic Lindbergh, a hero from his pioneer transatlantic flight, defeats FDR for the presidency in 1940. As war rages in Europe, the new President Lindbergh comes to an "understanding" with Hitler. Silver bought North American rights from agent Andrew Wylie and will publish in October, just before the presidential election.
