Cambridge UP Buys Medical House

Cambridge University Press has acquired U.K. publisher Greenwich Medical Media, which has a backlist of 150 titles. It also publishes four journals and has plans to expand its journal list this year. Former GMM managing director Geoff Nuttall was named publisher, medical media, of Cambridge's science, technology and medical group.
Although the contract was signed late last year, according to marketing director Sloane Lederer, Cambridge delayed making an announcement until the GMM books were in inventory and priced in dollars and ready for sale in the American market. "I think GMM will integrate nicely," Lederer told PW. "It really complements the press's list in terms of areas of specialty. It takes us into anesthesiology, which we hadn't had before." Lederer estimated that in 2004, Cambridge will publish 40 new titles originally contracted by GMM; Cambridge publishes approximately 1,500 titles per year, including trade, academic and ESL books. Existing stock will continue to ship with GMM ISBNs, but as new books are published, they will bear Cambridge ISBNs and spines.
This year Cambridge reps are carrying another new line in their bags. Cambridge will handle worldwide distribution for Asser Press in The Hague, which publishes international and European law titles.
