An Indie Favorite

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 5/10/2004

At #6 on the Book Sense national hardcover fiction list this week is Karen Joy Fowler's The Jane Austen Book Club (Putnam/Marion Wood). Putnam's first printing was 27,500, and sales activity took the novel back to press three more times, for a total of 87,500 copies in print. Rave reviews have been driving sales—including the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, USA Today, a lead review in Entertainment Weekly and a New York Times doubleheader—accolades in both the daily and weekend book review sections. Putnam is expecting about 30 more reviews in the next few weeks and anticipates the book hitting the national charts.
