Back to the Present

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 5/17/2004

Three new fiction hardcovers land this week, including Michael Connelly's The Narrows, which is #3 on PW's list. It is the author's 14th novel and his 10th in the popular Harry Bosch mystery series. Little, Brown reported 375,000 copies after five printings for the book, a sequel to Connelly's 1996 bestseller, The Poet. The Warner mass market edition of that book is #16 on our mass market list, and it has about 1.7 million copies in print. Connelly is finishing up a hectic 15-city tour that included more than 30 events.

In the #7 spot is Memorial Day by Vince Flynn, published by Atria Books. Flynn's newest bestseller has 210,000 copies in print after four trips to press; his Pocket Star mass market bestseller, Executive Power, has 650,000 copies in print after three trips to press. Flynn's 14-city tour ends in Phoenix on June 26. Atria noted that this is the first book for which it has done major radio and TV advertising. Flynn is also benefiting from raves from Rush Limbaugh, who read passages from the book on his radio show and urged listeners to buy the book. He and many reviewers have been speculating about Flynn's ability to write about events involving the U.S. government and its activities before they even happen. The publisher did say that Flynn has some carefully guarded high-level Washington contacts.
