John Sanford has been a regular on the national bestseller charts with his Prey novels, and his latest, Hidden Prey, the 15th to feature popular Det. Lucas Davenport, lands in the #3 slot. Putnam reports more than 462,000 copies in print, an all-time high figure for the author. His latest bestselling mass market reprint, Naked Prey, has 1,168,000 copies in print. Sanford hit the charts with his first book, Rules of Prey, in 1990, and he has been back each year with a new bestseller. Putnam estimates that there are more than 33 million hardcover and paperback copies combined of Sanford's books in print in the U.S.; the figure for mass market titles alone is about 28,692,000. Putnam explains his formula for success succinctly: "He delivers great thrillers that are loved by men and women alike." His fans would not disagree.
