Sedaris Scores

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 6/14/2004

David Sedaris's latest collection of satirical essays, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, goes right to the top of the charts after just a week in the stores. The one-day laydown was June 1, and Little, Brown's announced first printing of 450,000 was not enough to meet demand; the publisher has already gone back to press five more times, bringing the total in print to 590,000. This is Sedaris's first time at the top of the hardcover charts; his last book, Me Talk Pretty One Day, was on PW's hardcover charts for 13 weeks in 2000 and on the trade paperback list in 2001 for 17 weeks. He is on tour for the entire month of June, hitting about 25 cities. Reviews for the book have been terrific, including PW's Forecast, which said it includes the author's "best and funniest writing yet." So far the attendance at Sedaris's events has been double and triple that of his previous tours, with crowds of 800 to 1,800. The book got a strong boost as a promotion gift for local NPR stations' recent fund-raising drive.
