Elizabeth Cater, 70

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 6/14/2004

Elizabeth Cater, whose publishing career spanned 40 years at a number of houses, and whose annual invitational summer picnics for publishing people in Central Park are remembered by many, died May 28 after a long struggle with cancer. She was 70. Cater began her career as a children's book agent and editor, then moved into sub rights positions at a number of publishers, some long gone, including Bobbs-Merrill, Liveright, Praeger and Putnam. She also worked in the educational department of CBS Records, as director of educational publishing at Macmillan Book Clubs and most recently as publisher at Newbridge Educational Publishing.

A memorial service for the late FSG chairman Roger Straus will be held September 29 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
