by Julia Eccleshare, PW Daily for Booksellers -- Publishers Weekly, 7/13/2004

Jennifer Donnelly has won the 2003 CILIP Carnegie Medal for A Gathering Light (Bloomsbury), originally published here by Harcourt as A Northern Light. A Gathering Light is her first book for children, and was published in the U.K. in May 2003. Earlier this year it was chosen as one of the books to be featured on the Richard and Judy book program.

The 2003 Kate Greenaway Medal was won by Shirley Hughes for Ella's Big Chance (Bodley Head). This was Hughes's second win; she won her first Greenaway Medal in 1977, for Dogger.

The shortlist for the Carnegie Medal included David Almond for The Fire Eaters (Hodder); Mark Haddon for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Fickling); Elizabeth Laird for The Garbage King (Macmillan); Michael Morpurgo for Private Peaceful (Collins) and Linda Newbery for Sisterland (Fickling).

The shortlist for the Greenaway Medal included Anthony Browne for The Shape Game (Doubleday); Alexis Deacon for Beegu (Hutchinson), Debi Gliori for Always and Forever (Doubleday); Mini Grey for The Princess and the Pea (Cape); David McKean for The Wolves in the Walls (Bloomsbury); Bee Willey for Bob Robber and Dancing Jane (Cape); Chris Wormell for Two Frogs (Cape).
