Ivy League's 'The Chosen' to HM

by John Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 9/6/2004

Amanda Cook at Houghton Mifflin won a keenly contested auction for a book called The Chosen: Admission and Exclusion at Harvard, Yale and Princeton, 1900 to Today, which offers a detailed examination of the admissions procedures of the Ivy League giants, and the impact those choices have had on American government and culture. Author Jerome Karabel is a sociologist at the University of California at Berkeley and has devoted years to researching his topic, including diving deeply into university archives to come up with a picture of how the Big Three have changed—or in many cases failed to change—their policies over the past century. This was a purchase of North American rights from agent Eric Simonoff at Janklow & Nesbit, and the plan is to publish in fall next year.
