First Aid for Banned Books

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 9/13/2004

Random House Children's Books is reintroducing its First Amendment First Aid Kit in time for the 23rd annual Banned Books Week, which takes place from September 25–October 2. Created almost 10 years ago, the kit has been updated to address the current needs of booksellers and educators across the nation who are dealing with the continued controversy surrounding the passage of the Patriot Act.

The kit includes a brochure containing strategies designed to meet the needs of booksellers, librarians and teachers who may be faced with someone who is challenging a book and interviews with well-known authors whose books are challenged frequently; bookmarks; a poster; pins; and promotional leaflets listing books that dare to disturb the universe.

The kits will be distributed to librarians and teachers at annual educational conferences, at fall educator nights at retail outlets and through educational distributors. The contents of the brochure are available to the public online at www.firstamendmentfirstaid.com.
