Oh, Susanna!

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 9/13/2004

Susanna Clarke's debut fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell, lands in the #10 spot with 250,000 copies in print. Ten could be her magic number—that was the number of years it took her to write the book while working as managing editor of Simon & Schuster in Cambridge, England. On tour for all of September, Clarke will be signing in about 20 stores in 17 cities. Great reviews for the Bloomsbury title, including a PW star ("immersion in the mesmerizing story reveals its intimacy, humor and insight, and will enchant readers of fantasy and literary fiction alike"), have boosted the book's success. At least 19 foreign houses have bought rights.
