Low New Publisher at Lee & Low

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 10/18/2004

Independent children's book publisher Lee & Low has made a couple of promotions in the wake of the September resignation of one of its founders, Philip Lee. Jason Low, son of cofounder and company president Thomas Low, has been named publisher. Jason has been with L&L since 1997, most recently as v-p, marketing. Louise May, executive editor, has been named to fill the role of editor-in-chief, which also had been held by Lee.

L&L specializes in publishing multicultural literature for children. To encourage submission of books about people of color, L&L started the New Voices Award five years ago; the award is given to an author of color who has not previously published a picture book. Last year's winner was Paula Yoo, and the company hopes to release her title, Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds, next spring. L&L publishes a total of 10 to 12 titles annually.
