A Tasty Treat for Maya

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 2/7/2005

Maya Angelou's first foray into penning a cookbook was at the behest of her friend Oprah Winfrey. In fact, Hallelujah: The Welcome Table features a dish named by the TV host—Oprah's Suffocated Chicken. Back in mid-November, when Oprah aired her segment with Angelou, the Random House book had 151,000 copies in print after three printings. That segment was rebroadcast on January 26 and Hallelujah jumped back on the charts after a nine-week hiatus. Total copies in print after six trips to press (the last trip was to meet the demand after Oprah): 215,000 copies.
