Spring 2005 Children's Books

The spring season brings with it not only a number of big names, but some very big numbers. First-printing figures that were once seen only in the adult arena are becoming commonplace in the world of children’s books. Our spring laydown calendar gives a breakdown of the season’s biggest printings, from Shel Silverstein to Maurice Sendak to Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner.
Along with a comprehensive look at the books due out through June (and a sneak peek at fall’s highlights), we offer three features. The first explores the issues and challenges facing today’s largest children’s publishers. The second takes a look at the exploding trend of adult authors who are turning their talents toward writing for children and young adults. In the third feature, children’s editors talk about how having kids has affected the way they view publishing for young readers.
Our interview is with Mo Willems, who has won Caldecott Honors for two of his four published books, including his most recent, Knuffle Bunny. Willems discusses his journey from stand-up comedian to Emmy Award–winning writer to author and illustrator, as well as the themes that permeate his picture books.
